Starting November 19, 2012, nationwide Social Security field offices will close a half hour earlier than normal. In addition, offices will close to the public at noon every Wednesday beginning January 2, 2013. The only offices not putting the new hours into effect until a later date are those located in the regions most affected by Hurricane Sandy- New Jersey, New York City, and Long Island, NY. All offices will be closed to the public on November 23, the day after Thanksgiving, to allow employees to focus on cutting down the backlog of disability claims.
The reduction of public hours will give SSA employees, who will continue to work their regular hours, more time to process claims and conduct interviews, thereby cutting overtime costs. Fortunately, many Social Security services do not require a visit to a field office; almost everything can be done online or by calling the SSA toll-free number 1-800-772-1213, including applying for disability benefits. Alternatively, you can consult a disability attorney if you need further assistance.
